What to do when you can’t focus
July 07, 2019
Blessings to overcome and BE who God created you to be!

The last 4 months have been a bit of a struggle. I've kept things ticking over but I haven't had any oomph and I've had to put a lot of things on hold.

Does that happen to you sometimes?

I kept trying to push myself until the Lord got my attention and told me to let myself take some time out, have a rest, and do things that would restore my soul and bring me back to centre.

I've so enjoyed spending more time with God and allowing myself to BE. And now, from that place of unhurried rest, I'm ready to step out and do the things God's been laying on my heart.

My prayer for you is that today's coaching moment will speak to your situation and give you clues that will help you to breakthrough.

If you'd appreciate more regular updates and being able to chat with me, I invite you to come and join in the conversation on my Facebook page. You'll find lots of encouragement and inspiration there.

What to do when you can't focus

Do you have days when you can't seem to get anything done? You set aside time to do something, and when the time arrives you just can't settle to do it.

You KNOW you need to get things done, but even though deadlines are imminent you can't knuckle down and focus. I don't know about you, but I find it frustrating when that happens. Particularly if it happens time and time again.

Why can't you just decide to do it and get it done?

The inability to settle and think clearly – to focus – can be caused by a lot of different things. These are some of the main ones...

Are you TOO TIRED to concentrate?

A lot of people take pride in how little sleep they can get by on. But please, don't be one of them. Lack of sleep affects your brain cells ability to communicate with each other.

That leads to impaired focus, impaired memory, impaired mood, and overall performance.

If you're feeling bleary eyed or if it feels like you've got brain fog and you're wading through treacle... There's probably nothing wrong other than that you're overtired. You can't focus for long when you're sleep deprived.

What can you do about it?

A short term solution might be to go for a quick walk in the fresh air and get some exposure to natural light. Don't turn to caffeine, drink lots of water instead.

In the long term, change whatever needs to change to make sure you get enough rest every night so that you can start each day recharged and fully alert.

Are you spinning too many plates?

Multi-tasking is overrated!! When you have too many things happening at the same time it scatters your focus. You end up working harder, produce less, and become stressed and frustrated.

What can you do about it?

Prioritise and aim to focus on one thing at a time until it's finished. Finishing things is important. Each time you finish something you get a boost of dopamine, a brain chemical associated with productivity and motivation, and you feel so much better.

Chunk things down. Try working for 50 minutes then taking a 10-minute break. That will give you an opportunity to have a breather and refocus if necessary.

Try using a CLOSED Open-door Policy.

One of my clients posted this message on her door and ended up getting a lot more done because it put an end to lots of unnecessary interruptions.

Is your heart not in what you're doing?

If you're not interested in what you're doing you'll find as many ways as you can to put it off. You might know you NEED to get it done but that won't stop you WELCOMING distractions.

Why? Because doing the dreaded task causes you pain! Maybe it's boring, or it stirs up feelings of self-doubt, or makes you feel inadequate...

So, you put it off because you want to avoid the uncomfortable feelings. In this case, it's procrastination rather than lack of focus. You're repeatedly procrastinating about the same things because you want to avoid pain.

What can you do about it?

I'm sure you know the antidote! If it's something that MUST be done or must be done by YOU, just get it done! Do it first thing to get it out of the way.

Why? Because then the worst thing will be finished and everything else will be painless in comparison. That will free you up to be more motivated and much more focused for the rest of the day.

Or you could try using the Pomodoro Technique to help you chunk the task down, give it your UNDIVIDED attention, and stay focused.

In a perfect world, we'd all be doing interesting, motivating work that taps into how we're wired.

But many people don't have that luxury. Almost 70% of people don't enjoy their jobs and aren't engaged when they’re at work!

On average over 2 hours of productive time is lost every day due to distractions. People disengage when they're doing jobs they find boring or things that seem unimportant, especially when the project they're working on is overwhelming.

If that sounds like you, the solution is to discover, or re-discover, your sense of purpose and then take steps to pursue it. I have some free training that will help you with that. You'll find it here How To Discover Your Life Purpose
