5 Min LC: What happens when you put God first?

When we put God first amazing things start to happen...

"When we put God first, all other things fall into their proper place or drop out of our lives." Ezra Taft Benson

Coaching Moment

Jesus said, "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." Matthew 6:33

WHAT things was Jesus talking about? Jesus had just told His followers not to worry about material things such as food or clothing, or where they would live because God provides the needs of His followers WHEN they put God and His ways of doing things FIRST.

So, is it just a matter of putting God first in our lives and then He'll give us everything we need? Not quite, it's also a matter of living righteously. Simple? Maybe for some. Easy to do? Not necessarily!

It's not always easy to put God first and do the right thing. Especially when that means saying no to something or somebody that is REALLY important to you.

Giving God and His ways FIRST place in our life consistently can sometimes be very difficult.

It might seem easy to trust God with every aspect of your life when you're on a high or when you're inspired in church on Sunday morning. But when Monday dawns and trouble comes knocking, or you lose your job, you might be tempted to take the reins again, to take control and make things happen in your own strength.

Seeking God and putting Him first involves nurturing an intimate relationship with Him that sustains you EVERY day of the week.

Many Christians aren't as serious about following God as He wants us to be. They go to church, and occasionally read their Bible but when they're in the workplace or faced with a tricky situation it can be hard to tell the difference between them and an unbeliever.

They might have given their life to Jesus, their name might be in the Lamb's book of life, and they might love God to a measure, but not love Him with their whole heart.

The truth is that many Christians haven't yet surrendered many areas of their life to God. Consequently they're often frustrated, they don't see much victory over their circumstances, and joy is fleeting.

What about you?

  • Do you love God with your whole heart?
  • Are you putting Him first?
  • Are you seeking first the kingdom of God AND His righteousness?

Joyce Meyer said,

"Finally, I cried out to God for help, and thankfully, He heard and answered my prayer. He began to show me that I needed to let Him out of my 'Sunday Morning Box' and allow Him to be first in every area of my life. Since I did that, I am continually amazed at the ways that God provides for everything else I need."

I encourage you to put God first

  • Make it your goal to have a closer walk with God—a deep, intimate relationship with God.
  • Invite Him into every area of your life.

If you're constantly looking to other people for help and approval, ask the Lord to help you to stop doing that and depend on Him for what you need instead.

When you decide to love God with your whole heart, make Him first in your life, and aim to please God rather than people, it opens up the way for Him to bless you.

Your soul will prosper and joy and peace will become your hallmark.

I encourage you to lean on Him more than anything else.

Talk to Him...

Father, I want to love you with my whole heart and give you first place in my life, but I can't do it without Your help. Please help me not to let anything or anyone become more of a priority than my relationship with you.

God understands when you make mistakes, He doesn't expect you to live in your own strength or ability. He's your ever present help.

If you make a mess of things, don't let guilt or shame or discouragement hold you back; put things right with God and keep going.

I bless you with great grace to do whatever you need to do. One day at a time, one step at a time. You and God TOGETHER can do anything!

I talked a lot about talking to God and asking Him questions in the A Road Less Travelled training. If you haven't listened in yet, go now while you're thinking about it.
